Depression, seizure disorders, mobility restrictions, anxiety disorders and a variety of other conditions may qualify as having a disability and people with these types of conditions are legally allowed to take a service dog in public buildings, restaurants, and other places.
Both the federal ADA and California state law allow people with many different types of disabilities to use service dogs to assist them with their daily activities. A disability is no longer just viewed as vision or hearing impairments. Service dogs do not legally need to be trained by a program.
Individual dog owners are perfectly capable (and legally permitted) to train their own dogs to act as service dogs. A challenge for people training their own service dogs is getting their dogs adequately trained for public access. Being in public can be stressful for both the dog and handler, and not all dogs have the temperament to handle the stress of working in public.
To help others with disabilities to train their dog, The Inner Dog offers training, psychological profiling, and temperament testing to help you prepare your service dog for public access.
The Inner Dog offers a limited number of service dog training fee reductions for disabled persons whose incomes are less than $28,000 / year. Please email us if you qualify and would like to submit an application for a fee reduction. The amount of the reduction depends on your income.
